How much does it cost to self-publish a book? A realistic budget

October 3, 2026 · 8 min read

Uploading a book to Amazon KDP costs nothing. There is no setup fee, KDP provides a free ISBN for paperbacks, and printing is deducted from royalties only when a copy sells. The real cost of self-publishing is the work that makes a book worth buying.

Editing is usually the biggest line item. A developmental edit for a full-length novel commonly runs from several hundred to a few thousand dollars, and copyediting and proofreading are priced per word on top of that. Rates vary widely by editor and genre, so request a sample edit before committing.

Cover design is the second. Pre-made covers can be very affordable, while custom illustrated covers cost considerably more. Whatever you spend, the cover must work at thumbnail size and meet KDP's exact dimensions, or you pay twice.

Formatting can cost nothing if you do it yourself with a template or a dedicated layout tool, or a modest fee if you hire a formatter. The risk of doing it yourself is mechanical errors — wrong margins, broken tables of contents, low-resolution images — that trigger rejections or bad reviews.

ISBNs are optional on KDP but worth understanding. In the US, Bowker sells single ISBNs and discounted blocks of ten. Buying your own lets you list yourself or your imprint as publisher and use the same ISBN on other platforms.

Other common costs include author copies and proofs, a copyright registration if you want one, and advertising. Ads have no ceiling, so set a test budget and a stop rule before you launch.

Where to save: do not skimp on editing or the cover, because those decide reviews and click-through. Do save by formatting yourself if you can verify the result, by using KDP's free ISBN for a first paperback, and by delaying paid ads until the product page converts organically.

Manucheck is designed to replace the expensive surprises, not the editor. It checks formatting, KDP content-policy risk, cover dimensions and metadata before upload, which is the cheapest point to catch a problem.
